Phoenix is the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, which in turn is a part of the Salt River Valley. The metropolitan area is the 12th largest by population in the United States, with approximately 4.3 million people as of 2010.
Settled in 1867 as an agricultural community near the confluence of the Salt and Gila Rivers, Phoenix incorporated as a city in 1881. Located in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix has a subtropical desert climate. The canal system has ensured a thriving farming community, many of the original crops remaining important parts of the Phoenix economy for decades, such as alfalfa, cotton, citrus, and hay. Following World War II, high-tech industries began to move into the valley and air conditioning made residences much more comfortable in the very hot summers.
You have all seen our RV and below is the engine room of our home on wheels.
It is easy walking around the area of Tempe where we stayed in our RV.
Downtown Phoenix has tall buildings and wide roads.
The Roadrunner.
Ross enjoying a walk along a tree lined street.
After walking around the city it was time for lunch and whilst there are several breweries dotted around the city and we decided to check out the Pedal Haus Brewery.
The brewery is huge and following are some photos of the place which provides and idea of the size of it.
The brewery is surrounded by water fountains .
With rabbits looking on.
They have a great light rail system which for oldies like us for $1 each you can get a day ticket and travel as far as the train will take you and can hop on and off as much as you like.
It is clean and efficient.
It caters for the bike riding public.
It is well advertised.
Walking around the city you come across some interesting things such as the Gold Stars from movie stars of the past.
Tomorrow we take our Jeep to Flagstaff for Christmas. Flagstaff is a 3 hours travel from Phoenix and is 7,000 feet higher.
More to follow.
Cheers,
B and R
