Fort Lincoln - North Dakota.

We visited Fort Lincoln which is where 6 companies (approx 500 troops) of the 7th Cavalry under the command of Lt Col Custer.   Following the destruction of Custer's first home by fire this home was built and he and his wife Libbie lived here from 1873 until Custer died at the battle of the Little Bid Horn in 1876.

The home is is very elegantly decorated.  The piano was purchased from St Louis and the curtains where saved from their home that burnt.

Apparently Custer was very partial to onions and it is said he used to enjoy onions with each meal.  He was often seen eating an onion just like an apple.

The bedrooms were well furnished.

As is his war chest.

After leaving Custer's home we visited the original Fort Abraham Infantry Post which was situated on higher ground.

This in an infantry corner post of which there are 4 that were joined by fort type walls.

Throughout Custer's home are a number of photos including this one showing him in his self designed velvet uniform.

Last year we had the opportunity to walk the battle ground of Little Big Horn.  The ride for Custer and his men to get to Little Big Horn started from Fort Lincoln .   It was a very long ride, well over 400 miles and shows the Cavalry travelled very long distances during the "Indian Wars" .
