Wytheville, is located in in western Virginia and was named after George Wythe, a signer of the the American Declaration of Independence and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. It is know as the City of Lights.
During the Civil War it was of strategic importance during an attack in 1863 the Toland's Raid and again in 1865, the Stoneman's Raid. It is also the birthplace of Edith Bollings Wilson, the second wife of President Woodrow and First Lady of the USA.
The last lynching was here in Virginia in1926.
Today it is a small country town. The Main Street has speakers along the road which pays music. The day we visited the Eagles were playing.
There are several interesting things to do in the town. In a previous entry you will have seen that we visited Edith Bollings Wilson Museum. Another place to visit which provides great food, wonderful staff and panaramic views of the city is the Bollings Wilson Hotel. The hotel was completed in 1927 and named the George Whythe Hotel. At this time a single room cost $1.50 and $$2.50 for a double room. It functioned as a hotel until the 1970's when it took on another life as a Bank. After some years of abandonment a local chap by the name of Bill Smith bought the hotel and remained it after the local gill made good becoming the First Lady of the USA.
We decided on lunch which was delicious and Ross decided to try a local Kuntucky beer that was stored in Bourbon Barrels.
It was called Kentucky Bourbon Barrel and was on draft which is his preference. Declaring after his first sip that that was one of the best beers he has ever drunk.
After a sale's pick from our delightful server we decided to share their famous carrot cake. Now Ross does not like carrot cake. However, this was delicious and hopefully now he will be more partial to this deliciousness.
Below is the history of the county.
Below is a tribute to David Crocket who was a Virginian.
After lunch we took the elevator to the top floor of the Hotel where we got the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
There are several elegant houses in the town.
The day we visited Sheeter's Dog we decided on the way back to the car we stopped for a coffee at Count's Pharmacy which has a small cafe. The coffee was great as was the low calorie slice we shared. What really made our stop at this place was the delightful young lady who served us.
As we continue to travel this amazing country we enjoy meeting so many nice people.
Cheers,
Beverley and Ross
