On our arrival in St Johns we booked into the restored Morray Premesis which was originall a dockside warehouse. Very central and right on the water in the middle of downtown.
One of the most striking city features are the Jellybean Row type houses which were originally painted different colours to identify them for the posties as there were no house numbers.
These houses now immediately identify St Johns.
And they exist comfortably alongside more colonial styles of architecture.
On the other hand St Johns is also famous for its pubs, music and food. This statue is a tribute to the performing arts. It sits in George Street, the widely known pub crawl street with 137 pubs.
Some examples of the local fare include grilled scallops on a cream dill sauce accompanied by a local beer from the Quidi Vidi local brewery, http://www.quidividibrewery.ca/intro.php which makes beer using the water from icebergs.
and vegetarian spring rolls again accompanied by a local brew.
