We took the opportunity to visit Pecos which is some 45 miles North from Ft Stockton. One of our RV friends had suggested that we visit the West of the Pecos Museum. In its early life it had been the historic Orient Hotel. It was once the premier hotel of West Texas. It reflects the 19th century look of the day and was very up market for its time.
They also have a pair of big boots outside.
The hotel was operational from 10904 - 1946.
It is a very regal building with several sweeping staircases which lead to the upstares of 3 stories which housed the sleeping quarters.
This stair case leads to the bar which provides some insite into the gun fights of the time. On this occassion Barney Riggs who was referred to as the gentleman's shooter shot and killed John Denson.
There are several bullet holes to be seen in the walls of the saloon.
The saloon were there is a full - scale replicas of Judge Roy Bean's Courthouse and saloon. The barman provides the story of the time.
This shows how spacious the room is.
Located in the corner is a huge hutch.
Throughout the building there are different areas which give an over view of the time.
The dinning room is very regal.
The bedrooms were very substantial.
Over the years many have donated items to the museum. Dr Harold Lindley is one such person who practiced medicine from 1900 - 1950. After his death his family donated much of his equitment.
There are so many to see and much reminded this of our youth. However, this very complicated hair curler and dryer was not part of this.
They also have the lagest collection of Bennies which was donated by the family whose mother over many years coolected and made these creatures.
