The Houmas, also known as Burnside Plantation and currently known as Houmas House Plantation and Gardens, is a historic plantation complex and house museum in Burnside, Louisiana. The plantations established in the late 1700's, with the current main house completed in 1840. It was named after the native Houma people, who originally occupied this area of Louisiana. The complex, containing eight buildings and one structure, and the 10 acres (4.0 ha) they rest upon, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 27, 1980.
The door to the home is very wide and high. This was to facilitate a couple to both come into the house together. It also had room for the hooped skirts of the ladies.
There is elegance throughput the home.
When the film Hush Hush Sweet Charolette was made starring Joan Crawford and Bette Davis this home was used for all of the indoor filming.
Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge has more of a French influence than New Orlean's as depicted by this very French looking outfit which was worn by the King of the parade.
The home has many interesting pieces. The gold clock under this painting was originally owned by Josephine, Napoleon's wife.
Another interesting piece is this casting of Abraham Lincoln which when it was purchased it was thought to be brass. However, after a lot of cleaning it was found to be pure silver weighing 68 pound and valued at US$500,000. The sculpture was done by the same man who designed and worked on Mt Rushmore.
It was also interesting to see the medicines and potions used to self medicate.
There are a number of buildings dotted around the property. We stopped for a drink at the Turtle Bar.

There are many beautiful Oak trees on the plantation. These trees are 500 years old.
These trees date back 200 years,
There are many beautiful fountains and gardens to spend time walking around.
