Out and About in San Marcos, TX

San Marcos is a pretty town and is the home of Texas State University . It is located around a square which is similar to many smaller towns in Texas and it has an impressive Town Hall.

It's an historic area with everything fom the El Camino Real which was the trail route used when Mexico owned the territory to the Chisholm Trail which was also a cattle route in the pioneer days.

Bricks are situated around the square witch recognise citizens whose names are printed on them.

There is something for everyones taste.

You can even get warm cookies deliverd up until 3 am.

On Saturdays they have a Farmers's Market which has lots of good looking fruit and veges.

Lots of home made cakes and many more goodies to be enjoyed.

We enjoyed brunch at the Root Cellar Cafe and Brewery which our friend William mentioned to us. Its been in exisitance for 14 years and is a market to table restaurant. On Sundays the wait to get in is about 30 minutes and its worth the wait.

It has a cosy feeling inside.

With lots of art work on the walls.

Apart from coffee they offer a variety of mimosa's. This is the traditional orange one.

This is a blueberry mimosa which Ross had to try.

The food was delicious.

If we get the chance we will go back for dinner.

Out and About in TX

We are staying at the Pecan Park RV Park which is were we start and finish our trip. This evening the weather was cool enough to sit outside and enjoy a fire. This is the only time we have been able to do this as we depart for Australia 12 Nov.

Brunch at The Brick in San Antonio started with a bloody mary which had everything in it.

It was a chilly day so we opted to sit by the fire.

Ross enjoyed AHI Tuna.

Beverley found her Texas roots and had Chilly.

Thanksgiving is in a couple of weeks and HEB has some huge birds for sale.

We have lots of friends in San Antonio so we have been having lots of lunches out. Dinner following our outings is a cheese platter.

Black's BBQ - Lockhart,TX

Lockhart is a small country town close to where we are staying. Black's BBQ has been around since 1932 and it's the oldest family owned BBQ in Texas. Mr Black senior and his wife were married in 1940 and were married for 60 yrs. Mr Black died in 2017.

This is where all the meats are cooked and served.

Brisket is very popular and there are two varieties of brisket.

There are several other cuts of meat available including three types of ribs, sausage and turkey.

We opted for both the ribs and brisket.

Lochart is a pretty little town with some impressive buildings.

The City Hall is very elegant.

The food was great.

San Marcos, TX

We arrived at Pecan RV Park which is our go to RV Park as we always start from here on our travels and return here as where we store the RV is close by. This is also the Park we were evacuated from in 2017 before retuning to Australia. Hurrican Harvey which had orginated in the Gulf Of Mexico caused flooding in Texas so we departed the park an stayed in the Hilton Conference Centre where our RV stayed in the carpark.
The park is located near the San Marcos River which floods in harrican season. At this time of the year the weather is fine and getting a cooler as its Fall ( Autum) so the leaves are falling.

We stayed in the same RV spot as we were in before departing on our long adventure last year.

This is a view of the San Marcos River where in the summer many people enjoy tubing and swimming.

The park has lots of oak trees.

After leaving San Antonio last year we traveled through New Mexico and to Arizona to California and up as far as Seattle. On our way back to TX we returned to several places we had visited before. We have now been to every state in the USA apart from Alaska . Having lived in Canada for 3 years we see no point in going to Alaska.

Waco, Texas

We have been to Waco before but this was our first RV stop over. Waco is located in central Texas by the Brazos River. It has lots to see and is home of Dr Pepper's soft drink. We do not care for this soda but many Americans love it.
We took a free bus tour around the city and hopped off at the Silo area, the location of the Magnolia Bakery which was very popular. The area has lots of space for families to enjoy, and the home of many food trucks and so much more.

This area is called the Magnolia Markets at the Silos, which is a shopping complex that encompasses two city blocks in downtown Waco. It is markd by 2 120' high silos, built in 1950 as part of the Brazo Valley Cotton Oil Company.

It has a huge area which provides lots of space to enjoy for families. On the weekends there are lots of activities held here.

There are many places to get a nibble. This stall sold lots of different flavoured popcorn/

There are a variety of food trucks to choose from.

The Mangolia Store is huge and is full of homewares to purchase.

There is also the Magnolia Bakery had a line up to get in. its was very popular.

Ranch Davidian , member of an offshoot group of the Davidian Seventh - Day Adventist Church that made headlines on February 28, 1993, when its Mount Carmel HQ's, Waco, Texas, was raided by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF); four federal agents were killed in an assualt. A lenghty standoff beteen the group and the government agents then followed. It ended on April 19, after some 80 members of the group, including their leader David Koresh, died when the Mount Carmel complex was burnt to the ground following an attempt entrance by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
