Florida Capitol Complex- Tallahassee

On the site of the Capitol Complex are four very different buildings.  The oldest is the nineteenth century Old Capitol , restored and shrunken to its 1902 state.  The other three are the House and Senate office building and a 22 story Executive Office Building, sometimes called the New Capitol.

 The history of how Florida has progressed throughout the years is evident.

There are areas dedicated to the memory of heroes such as those who have been awarded the highest recognition of service to their country such as the Medal of Honor.

 From the 22nd floor there is a great view of the City of Tallahassee.

Tallahassee was chosen as the Territorial capital in 1824 and has become the centre of Government, has a number of University's, encourages art and culture and has some great restaurants.   We are very pleased we decided to visit this area.

Tallahassee Automobile Museum

Today we visited the Tallahassee Automobile Museum also know as known as a Collectables Museum.  It is located in Leon County, Florida.   The Museum is owned by Tallahassee - based businessman DeVoe l. Moore and primarily showcases items of Americana  from Moore's personal collection.  

The museum's collection includes over 150 rare vehicles.  Steinway grand pianos, die-cast toy cars, pedal cars, antique boats, golf memorabilia, clocks, motor bikes and so lots more.

There are many displays of so many things including different cultures.

This site is also known as the place, where during the 2016 presidential election, US President Donald Trump held a campaign rally on October 25, 2016 at the parking lot in which 20,000 people attended.  
It was a most interesting museum to visit.

Monticello - Florida

Monticello is a city north east of Tallahassee in Jefferson County, Florida.  It has a population of  just over 2.000.  It is a quaint town which has the impressive Jefferson County Court Courthouse.  It was built in 1909 .

Across the road from the Courthouse is The Meeting Oak which is around 250 years old and was where the Confederate Soldiers met for mustering in and inspection and assignment to units of the Florida Brigade.

We took the opportunity to tour the Jefferson County Jail 1906 - 1971.  This the Men's Prison.

This is the Women's Prison.

The following photos are from the Men's Prison.  The process for imprisonment involved the Booking Room.  It was also the room that noisy inmates were placed.  It is a very small room with only a chair, very thick walls.

Upstairs was were the male prisoners were housed.

Prisoners were permitted to leave their cells to exercise if they were behaving themselves.  Outside of the cell block is this enclosed area.

Around the walls of the above exercise are prisoners took the opportunity to write their thoughts on the wall.  Below are a couple of examples of what is written on the wall.

                                    

The area were murderers were housed in cells which were encased in a steel cage.

During the time of this jail the Sherif and his/her family lived onsite.  Below is the living room.

Across the road from  the Jail House is a tree covered with Spanish Moss.

The town also  has an Opera House. The Perkins Opera House Also known as the Monticello Opera House is an historic Theatre. In its hay day Perkins used this building for the merchandizing of the day.  It included a general store and sewing machine shop, hardware and farm implement supply store.
The Opera House was aded to the U.S. National Register in 1972.  It is believed to be haunted by john Perkins who built this Opera House in 1890.

After our historic adventures it was time for a bite to eat.  We choose the REV Cafe.

Inside the American Flag has pride of place.   This is made of wood.

Ross enjoyed pastrami hash brown with eggs and home-fries.  Beverley opted for grits with egg, cranberries, pecans, goat cheese and bacon.   Over the many years we have been traveling and then living in the USA we have never eaten grits.  When offered we always said no thank you.  So today was bite the bullet day for Beverley.  Overall she said it was rather tasty.

Mobile, Alabama - Part 2

Christ Church Cathedral was established in 1823 as the first Episcopal congregation in Mobile, Alabama and the first in the State of Alabama.  In 1906 a major hurricane swept through the Mobile area and the storm crushed the original steeple tough the roof destroying both in the process. Today the new steeple has installed with blow out windows which will prevent damage should there be another hurricane.

The church is beautiful inside.

The stained glass windows are outstanding with two of them being Tiffany glass windows.

There is an opportunity to undertake a tour of the windows of the Christ Church Cathedral.  The widows includeThe Creation, Washing the Feet of Jesus, Jesus Blesses the Children, Nicodemus Meeting Jesus at Night, The Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca, The Holy Communion, The Baptism of Jesus,Stilling the Tempest, Jesus Meets Nathanael, The Miracle at Cana, The Risen Lord.

Vestibule windows include Miracle of Feeding the Five Thousand  and The Four Gospel Writers.

They  are amazing.
