San Fernando Cathedral

There are many Cathedrals around San Antonio however, San Fernado Cathedral is one of the oldest in the USA.  It was originally built between 1738 to 1750.  To know more about this magnificent place of worship please search San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio, Texas.

In the entrance foyer of the Cathedral is a crypt containing the remains of some of the Alamo defenders.     The Alamo itself is a short distance away.

 Life is never dull in the White/Wright household and this evening we were  off to see the Eagles concert.  We last saw them in Australia about 10 yeas ago and they still sound great.  We decided to go in style so our favorite limo service provided our transport.   Kristi, a college friend of Albert's flew from St Louis to join us and we had a grand time.

 Beverley's work often sees her traveling to various counties in Texas.  The County of Goliad is very historic and it has an old Spanish Presidio and Mission with a functioning chapel that dates back to 1722.  It also has some  interesting eating places such as the Hanging Tree restaurant.

Dr Larry Morning Star who Beverley frequently travels with enjoys life and was delighted to pretend that he had shot and skinned this loin.

This restaurant features many mounted beasts on the walls.

We will post more on historic Goliad at a later time.

Among the many and very diverse eating establishments we frequent is a traditional Texas Diner called Abel's where meat loaf is a daily staple.

Other examples of their fare includes fish and chips and grilled chicken.  Please note the size of the chicken.  Well it is Texas.

Another evening saw us at the Fish City Grill.  Arm wrestling is one way of sorting out who pays the tip. Here Faythe gave Greg a run for his money.

Life is to be enjoyed.

New Adventure

Yes, it has been sometime since our last entry however, we have not been idle.  Lots has happened since returning from Denver in July. We are starting the next phase of our lives by purchasing  a 38 Ft Forest River motorhome.  We became the proud owners of our future part time home on 2 October. 

It has satellite tv and radio, winter furnace, a substantial generator and many other accessories.

We will tow our much loved Jeep behind us.  The Jeep has been with us since our first week in Canada in December 2008 and has been a great vehicle.

The interior is light and spacious and in the next 2 weeks we are having our 2 couches recovered in a brighter color.

The kitchen is very compact and we have chosen all red appliances to add some co;our to the this area.

Yes, it is a king sized bed with a 14 inch memory foam mattress.

The left hand cupboard  houses a washer/drier.

Ross has become a very skilled motorhome owner and has continued to transform the RV into a home away from home.
We have spoken for many years about purchasing a motorhome and we are both delighted in our purchase.  Our first big trip will be in spring next year to South Dakota.

Denver

Last post we mentioned on our last day in Colorado we enjoyed lunch in Golden, well we put the horse before the cart as on our way to Denver we enjoyed a great couple of hours walking around the area know as Fort Collins.  Fort Collins is the Home Rule Municipality in the county seat of Larimer County.  It is more family-centric that the surrounding County.  The tree lined streets provide the opportunity to wander and admire the boutique stores,

and to enjoy foods that locally grown and served at a cafe situated under the canopy of the huge oaks which provide shade to the traveller.

Denver itself is a very interesting city.  The 'I can now see you bear' was designed by an Australian and depicts what happens when we attend conferences.  How many of us have uttered these words when we have been at a conference and the 'penny finally' drops.

Denver is a very pretty city and all of the trees have been planted.  Prior to the enormous tree planting started in the late 1900's the city was as bare the rolling hills of Montana.

When on a tight schedule the way to see the place is to catch a tour bus.

It reminds one of the cover of a Beatles Album.

But it was a great way to see the sights.  The capital Building's cupola is one of only 5 covered with gold in the USA.

The Brown Hotel is an icon and has an old railway bucket carriage deep in the bowels of this building.  It was used in a bygone era to ferry the well to do gentleman of the day under the road to the bordello across the street.

There are many stately homes to be seen. 

It was the 4th July and it was pleasing to see many families enjoying good times with family and friends.

We took the opportunity to have lunch at Bubba Gumps.

Beverley could not miss the chance to "walk in the shoes" of this icon.  Please note the 'box of chocolates and the suitcase.'

This was our last day with Trish and Murray and we all had a fabulous day.

Our next trip away looks like being late September when we will head to Rapid City, South Dakota to visit the Little Big Horn Battlefield and Mount Rushmore.

Golden, Colorado.

On our last day before retuning home we had lunch in a town called Golden.  Golden  lies just north of I-70 and west of Denver at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Situated between Lookout Mountain and the Two Table Mountains. 

It is a very pretty town with interesting buildings.

The town has a historic feel to it and it proudly incorporates its rich cultural past into many of the shops and resturantants located in the town.

Dotted throughout the town are many statues which depict a bygone era.

This weekend we saw many hot rod type cars mostly driven by baby boomers.

Located between North Table Mountain and South Table Mountain is the Coors Brewery.

As it was the 4th July weekend there were many groups taking the opportunity to flex out and enjoy happy times with friends and family.

Those baby boomers not driving hot rods were riding expensive (for the USA) motor cycles like this beautiful machine from the recently revived Indian Motor Cycle Company (this model retails for around $20,000 plus state tax).

Lunch was at the Golden Hotel, overlooking scenic Clear Creek and the Rocky Mountain Foothills and is located in the heart of the historic downtown Golden, Colorado.

We had a great few days with Trish and Murray (thanks guys, enjoy your forthcoming trip to the UK) in Wyoming and Colorado and it was a relaxing way to spend the 4th of July break.
