Savannah - Part 4 - Isaiah Davenport House

The Isaiah Davenport House was built in 1820.  It is built in the Federal style and was built by an up and coming artisan and his crew for his growing household which included his wife, children and slaves.  This was Isaiah's home until his death in 1827 from yellow fever at age 43 years of age.  Following his death his wife Sarah took over the operations of the home and started to take in boarders.
Sarah delivered 10 children, 3 of who died in infancy from childhood diseases.

Only one daughter survived and this was her bedroom.  There are no curtains in this room.

The parent's room however, did have drapes and was the largest room in the home.  As there were many children born to this family the baby crib became a permanent part of the furnishings.

The land on which the home was built was not all that large and these days it features a very pleasant garden.

There are so many historical homes to visit in this beautiful city.

Cheers,

Beverley and Ross
