Wichita, Kansas
Wichita, Kansas, has progressed a long way from its cow-town days at the head of the Chisholm trail in the 1870's to its current claim as Air Capital of the world as about half the world's general aviation aircraft being built here such as Cessna and Beech. Today the temperature was 103 F so we limited ourselves to only a couple of activities. Our first stop was to visit The keeper of the Plains who represents the God of the Indians of the Plains (all Plains Tribes).
To get to the statue there is walking bridge.
Once across the bridge to The keeper of the Plains the story unfolds and is told by picture and images of the Plains Indians.
Women played a significant role in the tribes. Their opinion held weight, she was joint owner of family property, responsible for child rearing as well as held influence over matters of money, divorce, places of residence. European women were clearly a long way behind the these women.
Wichita City has many museums which are located along the river district and many other sights to see.
Wichita's historic, all-brick Old Town, is good for shopping, eating and drinking. We had lunch at an converted gasoline station.
Tomorrow we are off to Kearney in Nebraska.
Best wishes to all,
Beverley and Ross
